| The Goat's Prayer |
To MY MASTER, I offer this prayer. Feed me, water and care for me, and when the day's work is done, provide me with shelter and a clean dry bed wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. Always be kind to me and talk to me. Your voice means as much to me as the food I eat. Pet me sometimes, I may serve you more gladly and learn to love you. Do not jerk my lead, and do not strike, beat, or kick me when I do not understand what you are asking of me, but give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I do you wrong, see if something is wrong with my lead or feet. Do not jerk me so that I do not have free use of my head. Keep my feet well trimmed. Examine my teeth when I do not eat; I may have an ulcerated tooth, and that is very painful. I can not tell you when I am thirsty, so give me plenty of fresh, cool water often. Save me, by all means in your power, of those fatal goat diseases. I can not tell you in words that I am sick or wormy, so watch me, by my bodily signs you may know my health condition, whether it be good or bad. Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun and cold wind and rain. Remember, that I must be ready at any moment to lose my life to you. And finally, MY MASTER, when my strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner or breeder, to be slowly tortured and starved to death; but do take my life in the kindest way, and your God will reward you here and hereafter.
AMEN
